Tibet Support Group Grampian holds a sponsored walk
every year to raise funds for Tibet organisations. The Walk is
always an enjoyable occasion in which old and young, regular and
occasional walkers, children and dogs participate, with numbers varying
from 25 to 50, and finishing at a local tea room. Last year the Walk
raised £800. The proceeds are split between Free Tibet Campaign
and the Tibet Foundation, which runs aid projects in Tibet.
The Walk this year is in an area about 5 miles north-west of Ballater.
The meeting point is at a parking area on the east side of the A939 (OS
map 37, GR 430997). The Walk is of length about 7.5 miles, on
tracks and paths, and not too hilly. The route initially goes to Morven
Lodge, then via Lary to Glen Gairn. The last part of the walk through
Glen Gairn is very interesting historically. Glen Gairn was home to the
MacGregor clan, and it was here in the ‘Long Haugh’ by the river that
men gathered to go to Culloden. The area was also a Catholic stronghold
in the 18th century, and the walk passes ruins of two chapels and a
manse.
The meeting time is 10.30am for a 10.45am start, and we anticipate
returning to the start point around 3.00 to 4.00 pm. Bring a picnic
lunch. Tea afterwards (optional) is at the Station restaurant in
Ballater.
If you would like to come on the Walk please let us know your address
so that we can send you a Walk Sponsorship leaflet with more
information. There is no need to get sponsorship if you don’t wish –
many walkers just give a donation. We hope to be able to arrange lifts
for those without transport - let the organizers know if required.
